about

Wooden Nickels is expansive clawhammer banjo, groove-heavy fiddling, plus loud, yet introspective guitar accompaniment. This trio brings a fresh and oh-so-reverent perspective to both the Old-Time American and Irish musical traditions. Enjoy the tunes!

Joel Wennerstrom
Joel plays clawhammer banjo and guitar for contra and square dances in the New England area. Before moving to Boston in 2013, Joel lived in NYC, where he taught design and drawing at Pratt Institute. His playing is featured on various recordings, including Hammer & String’s “The Girl Who Broke My Heart” with Rhys Jones and Cleek Shrey, “Jumping Through Hoops” with Kristin Andreassen, Chris Eldridge and Paul Kowert, “The Pleasure of Your Company” with Harry Bolick, “All in Good Time”, with Alan Kaufman and Don Stratton, and “A Fiddler’s Sojourn” with Jeff Trippe.

Laura Feddersen
Laura grew up in a musical family in Bloomington, Indiana. After spending much of her childhood asleep in a bass case at dances and festivals, she took up the fiddle herself, playing for the square and set dances in her hometown. Laura has since traveled extensively throughout the country playing and teaching fiddle, building sheds, and planting vegetables. She is renowned for her unique and skillful interpretation of Irish and American traditional music. Laura now resides in Boston where she plays all the best pubs, parties, and park benches. She recently released her debut album "Life is All Checkered" with Boston-based Irish fiddler Nathan Gourley.

Owen Marshall
Guitarist and Vermont native, Owen Marshall’s musical roots were firmly established by the local music scene: contra dances, small concerts, and a thriving Irish music community. Owen has accompanied and collaborated with many of traditional music’s top acts and has performed around the globe. In addition to being a respected performer, Owen is in demand at music camps throughout New England and the U.S., where he shares his approach to accompanying traditional music.
